The Toltec, Aztec, and Mayan Indian Tribes TOLTECS The Toltecs were an Indian tribe who existed from 900 A.D. to 1200. They had a capital city of Tollan, and their influences reached south to the Yucatan and Guatemala. They were a composite tribe of Nahua, Otomi, and Nonoalca. The Tolt ecs made huge stone columns decorated like totem poles. AZTECS Aztecs were an American Indian people who rule an empire in Mexico during the 1400s and early 1500s. They practiced a religion that affected every part of their lives. To worship the Aztecs built towering temples, created huge sculptures, and had human sacrifices. They fought not only to enlarge their empire but also to take prisoners to sacrifice to the gods. The market place was a major center of Aztec life, more than 60,000 people visited it daily. They had no system of money, they traded goods and services for other goods and services. They had no pack-animals, a nd as a result, they themselves had to carry all their goods over land. The end of the Aztec empire came when the Spaniards came. The first time the Spaniards were mistaken for returning gods. When they returned to Spain, they told of all the gold that the Aztecs had. The Spaniards returned one year later with canons and they had the help of the other indian tribes of the area, in destroying the Aztec empire. MAYANS The Mayan civilization flourished from the 3rd to the 16th centuries in an a rea the included the peninsula of Yucatan and the eastern part of Chiapas in Mexico, most of Guatemala, the western region of the Republic of Honduras. In the Spanish conquest only a few Mayans resisted the conversion to Christianity. 1984 Winstons Dream Essay Example For Students

1984: Winstons Dream Essay 1984 is a powerful work of George Orwell, but one of the key components to the book is the dream of Winston and how that dream relates to the book overall. Winston dreams of the deaths of his mother and sister. They were sinking in water, sacrificing their lives in some tragic, loving way to keep Winston alive. The dream then changes to the Golden Country, an idyllic setting. A girl runs towards him, carelessly tearing off her clothes in defiance of the Party. Winston wakens with Shakespeare upon his lips. Apart from numerous abstract details, Orwell uses concrete details. First, the appearance of Winstons parents is described. Winstons mother was a tall, statuesque, rather silent woman and Winstons father was dark and thin, dressed always in neat dark clothes. By describing the parents, the reader can better make a mental picture of the parents as they were swallowed up in one of the great purges of the Fifties. The next paragraph describes the deaths of Winstons mother and sister. Winstons sister is described as a tiny, feeble baby, always silent, with large, watchful eyes. I believe that Orwell uses the description of the baby as a depiction of the corrupt power of the Party. Furthermore, the young sister was in her arms. The embracing of a child was a forgotten act in 1984, but when the mother and child died, the embrace was a common sign of family love. This type of family love that was connected to the past brings Winston closer to his love of the better past. Although reading into faces could approach the abstract nature of ideas, Winston could see knowledge in the faces of his mother and sister. The mother and sister knew that they were dying in order for Winston to live. Furthermore, there was no reproach either in their faces or their hearts. The mother and sister simply knew that their inevitable death was part of the unavoidable order of things. In 1984, devotion to the Party and devotion to Big Brother left little to no room for others. In 1984, no normal person had the level of love to die for a family member. However, in the dream of the better past, love was evident. The cruel knife of the Party had not yet cut the cord of family love. The death of the mother and sister was tragic. The death was described as being in a deep grave. Next, they seemed to be in a saloon of a sinking ship. The green water separated Winston from his family more and more. Though the concrete visual seems to merge on abstract ideas, the dream is definitely presented in a way to show the harsh nature of the death. The death was tragic. To Winston, tragedy belonged to an ancient time, a time when privacy, love, and friendship were common. In 1984, these positive attributes were replaced by fear, hatred, and pain. The change makes evident the backward ideology that continues to grow and grow, becoming crueler with time. Later in the book, OBrien describes the future with the image of a face being stomped on forever. However, in Winstons dream, the past is characterized by the embracing of a helpless child. Winston longs for a different, better life. The dream describes the nature of family loyalty. In 1984, the family structure seems to flip inside out. The children are largely in control of the family. The Party increases their control upon the people. The second half of the dream has more to do with the future. The second part of the dream starts with a description of an idyllic setting, the Golden Country. The scene is that of an old, rabbit-bitten pasture, complete with a foot track, elm trees, and a slow-moving stream under the willow trees. The scene is in a place in the country. What draws Winston to the landscape is the most is the fact that the land is away from the cities. The land makes him think of a time and place where one could escape from the constant supervision of the Party. In an isolated place, one could act more freely. The party members could do only what they could have done before the Party took power. Next, the girl with dark hair is coming to Winston across the field. She then tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside. Winston wasnt absorbed with the white and smooth body of Julia. What Winston really appreciated was the gesture with which Julia threw her clothes aside. The grace and carelessness displayed by the act seemed to annihilate a whole culture, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm. The gesture of Julia is a gesture from another time. Only in the past would one have the courage or the freedom to do such an act. Little does Winston know that his dream is a foreshadowing of the true future. One day, Winston will meet Julia in that rabbit-bitten pasture, the very same pasture of the dream. One day, Julia will tear her clothes off in defiance of the Party. One day, Winston will be at peace in a place away from the Party, and Winston will not have to constantly dodge the Party and its tactics. Much of the dream is about Winstons longing for the past and how he desires to be connected to the past as much as possible while remaining in the confined present. As Winston awakes from his dream, the word Shakespeare is on his lips. Shakespeare is deeply rooted in the past. The Ministry of Truth has undoubtedly erased or reformed much of Shakespeares writings, and Winstons thought of Shakespeare represents his subconscious desire and love for the better past.

Turning The Age Of Sixteen Is A Huge Step In The Life Of A Teen. When

Turning the age of sixteen is a huge step in the life of a teen. When becoming the age of sixteen a new challenge is brought into a person's life, the task of driving a car. But are sixteen year olds ready for this for this task. Driving a car is a task that should only be taken on by teens over the age of eighteen year olds because they are more responsible and understand the risk involved, there brain is underdeveloped and most of the driving they do is unnecessary. In today's society the idea of sixteen and seventeen year olds operating cars has become a way of life. But if one stop's to think about it there is no need for these drivers to be on the road. Most of these drivers still live at home and have no job because they're still in school. So they have no job to drive to or from. To go to school they can take the bus or be dropped off by their parents. From past experiences when I was this age I know how much useless driving I use to do. In Atlanta there is a huge problem with smog that is caused by to many cars on the road. The Department of transportation is always thinking up new ways to resolve this problem. The months when school is in session is when smog is at it's highest. By taking these drivers off the road it would cut down on smog because they would be forced to ride the bus. When I was sixteen me and my friends use to load up in a car and just drive around town all night. Most of the time we would end up doing stuff to get in t rouble. Another problem with these drivers is they are very irresponsible and put other drivers in danger on the road in danger. Recent statistics show that most drivers who are caught speeding or involved in automobile accidents are under the age of eighteen. This is because the drivers have no responsibility and cannot handle the task of driving a car. In Georgia congress members have noticed this problem and are working on an amendment that would raise the driving age to eighteen. By raising the driving age to eighteen it would give these teens more time to mature before getting behind the wheel of a car. Sixteen and seventeen year old are still going through puberty and learning more about what the real world is like. During these extra two years there is a lot that can be learned about responsibility. When driving a car irresponsibly it puts the person behind the wheel and others people on the road at risk. During my senior year in in high school there were five people killed in car acc idents that went to my school. Four of these five people were under the age of eighteen. One person who was killed was a good friend of mine. She was driving on a road one night that had very sharp curves. When she came up on a sharp curve she lost control of the car and ran off the road striking a tree. She was rushed to the hospital but died later on that night. The speed limit on this road was thirty-five. Investigators of the accident said she was going at least seventy when she ran of the road. A responsible driver would realize the risk involved in driving this fast and would more than likely slow down. If only she was a little older and faced with this situation she would have slowed down. From the age of sixteen to eighteen there is a lot of development going on in the brain. A major part of the brain that is developing is the part that deals with judgement. Judgement is used in many different ways when driving a car. When driving on the interstate you use judgement to decide how closely to follow the car in front of you or when do begin to stop when coming up on a red light. Sometimes these situations require spur of the moment decisions that a fully developed mind cannot handle. A person under
